HMS Hermes Aircraft Carrier
Laid down in 1918, but not commissioned until February 1924, HMS Hermes was the first ship designed as an aircraft carrier, although the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Hōshō was the first to be launched and commissioned.
She was sunk 9 April 1942 by Japanese aircraft off the coast of Sri Lanka.
