HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913) British Battleship

HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913)

The lead ship of her class, HMS Queen Elizabeth was a super dreadnought battleship of the British Royal Navy. Launched on 16 October 1913 and commissioned on 22 December 1914 she served in both World Wars.

During the First World War, she participated in the Gallipoli Campaign and the inconclusive action of 19 August 1916, but otherwise mostly undertook patrols and training.

During the Second World War, HMS Queen Elizabeth was badly damaged by Italian frogmen in Alexandria Harbour on 19 December 1941. After temporary repairs, she was sent to the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia, in the United States for comprehensive repairs. Following her return to the Home Fleet in July 1943 she departed to join the Eastern Fleet in December 1943.

Placed into reserve in August 1945, she was scrapped in 1948.
