North American XF-108 Rapier
Designed as a Mach 3 interceptor to counter envisaged Soviet supersonic bombers, the North American XF-108 Rapier was to be equipped with a radar and missiles capable of engaging bombers at 100 miles. Due to rising costs and the adoption of ballistic missiles by the Soviets as the main delivery vehicle of nuclear weapons, the project was cancelled after only the wooden mockup was completed.
