Glow Worm Tunnel Wollemi National Park

Lithgow

Lithgow

We drove to Lithgow after visiting the Newnes Industrial Ruins in the Wollemi National Park.  We stayed at Mount Victoria Manor for two days, while looking around the area.

Visitor Information Centre

We stopped here to find out what else there was to do in Lithgow and the surrounding area.  The building is shaped like an old underground miner’s lamp, in tribute to Lithgow’s mining heritage.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, so if you want to find out what is currently on in town, this is a great place to stop.

Bowenfels Train Station

This beautiful old building is walking distance from the Visitor Centre. Although it was fenced off we were still able to see the old stonework which made up for not being able to get inside. If you go to the Visitor Centre this is worth a quick look.

Small Arms Factory

The Small Arms Factory is one of the major attractions in Lithgow. Now a museum, this factory used to manufacture weapons for the Australian Military. For the full story on our visit, follow the link.

Bowenfels Gun Emplacements

These anti aircraft guns were stationed in Lithgow during World War Two to defend the Small Arms Factory and coal industry. For the the full story of our visit, follow the link.

Court House

Located on the opposite corner of Mort and Bridge Streets to the Uniting Church, this old building is worth a look as you pass by.

Main Street

Main Street has some wonderful old buildings, so stop and have a look around while you walk down the street. In the centre of town is a statue of the Lithgow Flash, Marjorie Jackson, one of Australia’s all time sporting greats.  We stopped near her statue and had a coffee at a nearby cafe.

Street Art

We ran across this street art walking down main street. It’s nice to find things like this that you weren’t expecting.

Uniting Church

This impressive church is on the opposite corner of Mort and Bridge Streets to the court house.  It’s set in some nice gardens and looks great.

Hassans Walls

Hassan’s Walls are only a short drive from Lithgow and well sign posted, and it gives a fantastic view over the surrounding country. The car park has plenty of room and the walk to the lookouts is very short. There are several places to look from each providing amazing views of the surrounding scenery.

As it’s such a short drive this is a must do when in the area.

Glow Worm Tunnel

The Glow Worm Tunnel is about a 90-minute drive from Mount Victoria. We left very early in the morning to avoid the crowds that visit there.  For the full story of our visit, please follow the link.

Newnes Industrial Ruins

The Newnes Industrial Ruins in the Wollemi National Park are a great place to visit.  Some of Australia’s early industrial past can be seen, while you walk along bush paths.  For the full story about our visit, follow the link.

Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria Manor

We stayed in this wonderful old manor house for two nights and loved it. This historic old building has nice comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, a well stocked bar, restaurant and friendly helpful staff. Breakfast was great and there was even home made jam

Mount Victoria Train Station

This wonderful old station has a small museum, but the main attraction is the main building. They still use the old wooden departure boards for the train time table

Imperial Hotel Mount Victoria

Mount Victoria Memorial Park

This memorial park has the local war memorial, but also has a virtual zoo; the animals are painted on the walls of the cages. There is also some nice artwork on the side of the toilet block

What Did We Think?

The Lithgow area was a great place to base ourselves for a few days. From Mount Victoria, we were able to see all that Lithgow had to offer as well as journey further afield to the Glow Worm Tunnel.
