As with many great artistic retreats, Pilliga Pottery is located in a quiet out-of-the-way location. Despite this, it is easy to find, and the dirt road into it was well maintained when we went.
The Road into Pilliga Pottery
Our first stop was the restaurant where we purchased some home-made scones with jam and cream to eat and drinks before we walked around the show room. It was cold outside, coming into the restaurant was also very nice and warm due to the kilns being close by.
A small show room next to their restaurant displays some of the products made there. There was a nice range of quality pottery at good prices. It was a really relaxed welcoming environment with no pressure to buy anything.

You are also encouraged to walk through the workshop and talk to some of the artists , and see how things are made, which was very interesting.

Sculptures in the Scrub is located in the Pilliga State Forest to the north of Coonabarabran. The road in is dirt and when we went was badly corrugated. Be careful of the road conditions with respect to your type of car as it may be dangerous in the wet. There are two section to this walk. The first follows the top of the ridge where the sculptures are located, while the second winds around the base and then leads back to the car park (you can get a different perspective of the sculptures from the bottom level).
Five artists have work displayed here in a unique bush environment, with each piece taking advantage of its natural setting to enhance its beauty. As you walk along the bush tracks, you come across each sculpture in turn.

Each sculpture has an information board detailing its meaning and significance to the local aboriginal people.
The bronze of the aboriginal man and child can also be viewed from the base of the escarpment, giving you a second perspective on this sculpture.

Like many modern western cities Newtown has a problem with graffiti. To combat this issue the city council has made many areas available to artists for official street art. Newtown street art has since become an attraction bringing people to the area as well as reducing an eyesore.
Getting There
Travelling to Newtown is very easy. The Newtown Train Station is a nice central location from which to start exploring. Although the art works are constantly changing and being renewed most of the more interesting ones appear to be permanent.

We went on a Newtown street art walk with several locations in mind and ended up finding many that were either new or not mentioned in other guides to the area. As we walked past side streets we would see more interesting works, or pass them on the street we were walking down. The walk we took is only a suggestion as there is so much to see. It also took far longer than the 40 minutes suggested, because of photo stops and detours.
Some art was obscured by cars, bins and light-poles. As there’s nothing you can do about it,we just moved on to the next one.

Some of the street art has also been prayed over, so the problem of graffiti has not completely gone away. As you walk around the side streets there are many areas where this is still the case, but the great street art makes up for it.

The volume of artwork could easily take half a day or more to see. If you don’t want to spend this much time just pick the main ones and see those.

Coffee and Old Buildings
Newtown also has a lot of coffee shops. The main street is full of them.so you wont go thirsty. While walking around loom up and admire the old buildings and churches you pass some of them are quite beautiful. In the quiet side streets you will pass some amazing old cottages.
