Avro Lancaster in the Egyptian Air Force
Egypt operated the Avro Lancaster in the post-war period from 1950. An order for nine refurbished B Mk Is was filled with airframes in storage at Langer, which were refurbished at Bracebridge Heath. All the airframes were updated, while all RAF radar equipment was removed Although all armament was also removed, the turrets remained.
After refurbishment, the aircraft were test flown in the UK with registrations G-11-60 to G-11-68. All aircraft were ferried to Egypt in late 1950 and allocated Arabic codes 1801 to 1809 for Royal Egyptian Air Force service. Based at Almaza these machines saw very limited use due to lack of spares, although it would seem that some (possibly just 3) saw action during the 1956 Suez campaign.
