British Escort Carrier HMS Trouncer

HMS Trouncer

Laid down as USS Perdido (CVE-47), a Bogue-class escort carrier 1 February 1943 and launched 16 June 1943 she was taken over by the Royal Navy at Portland, 31 January 1944. During the remainder of World War II, she served the Royal Navy as the Ruler-class escort carrier HMS Trouncer (D85) and took part in convoy escort and ASW patrol operations.

Her first journey across the Atlantic saw her escort Convoy TCU.35, departing New York on 11 July and arriving in the UK on 22 August. Onboard were the Vought Corsair IIIs of No.1843 Squadron, which disembarked on 24 August to continue training.

The Trouncer continued to operate in the Atlantic, escorting Convoy CU.44 from New York to the UK (sailing on 22 October 1944, arriving on 2 November). At some point in November or December she was used for deck landing training, before returning to the US at the end of the year.

Throughout 1945, HMS Trouncer continued convoy escort duty, in the Altantic.

Returned to the US Navy on 21 February 1946 she was sold into merchant service as Greystroke Castle (renamed Gallic in 1954 and Berinnes in 1959). She was sold for scrap in Taiwan in 1973.
