de Havilland Mosquito Highball Bouncing Bomb
The Highball bouncing bomb was developed in conjunction with the Upkeep bomb developed by Barnes Wallis for the Royal Air Force. Whereas Upkeep was designed to destroy dams, highball was designed for use against ships, with the potential for use against railway tunnels and submarine pens.
A de Havilland Mosquito could carry two Highball bombs in a modified bomb bay. The Royal Air Force 618 squadron was equipped with the weapon and was under going training in Narromine New South Wales, Australia when the Second World War ended. Highball was never used operationally and the Mosquitoes of 618 Squadron where sold off after the war to civilian purchasers. The Narromine Aviation Museum has a display of the Squadron’s deployment to the area.
