DFS 346
The DFS 346 was a rocket powered research aircraft developed by Germany toward the end of the Second World War. The incomplete prototype was retrieved by Soviet forces and tested in the Soviet Union. The original prototype was found to be unstable in flight and was re-designed. Flying unpowered as the 349-1, it was damaged and later repaired, and fitted with a rocket engine as the 349-2.
The 349-3 was flown with the rocket operating, but on September 14, 1951 the pilot ejected after the plane became uncontrollable. The project was cancelled soon after.
During Testing a Tupolev Tu-4 Bull was used a the carrier aircraft. The Tu-4 was a copy of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress.
