The Regia Aeronautica received 12 Dornier Do 217 J-1 and J-2 night-fighters from September 1942 (six of each subtype). The Dornier Do 217s were operated by the 235a Squadriglia of the 60o Gruppo, 41o Stormo Intercettori.
Originally based in Treviso-San Giuseppe, but later moved to the Lonate Pozzolo on 21st October of 1943. The squadron’s only victory occurred on the night of 16th-17th July 1943 south-west of Milan. Capitano Ammannato, flying a Do 217 J-1 intercepted an Avro Lancaster of 207 Squadron RAF which he shot down. At the time of the Italian Armistice, 11 Do 217s were still on strength, although only five were operational.
