The end of World War II, and the large number of Essex-class carriers already resulted in her cancellation on August 12, 1945. At this time she was about 52.3% complete. Later that year she was launched to clear the slipway. The hull was used for experiments to assess bomb damage. Plans were drawn up to complete her as an attack carrier, but this was ultimately dropped and she was sold to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, Maryland for scrap in 1949.
