HMS Conqueror

The third of four Orion-class battleships built for the Royal Navy, HMS Conqueror was laid down on 5 April 1910 and launched on 1 May 1911. Commissioned into the Royal Navy on 23 November 1912, she served mainly with the Home and Grand Fleets during World War One.

During the Battle of Jutland, HMS Conqueror fired a total of 57 twelve-inch shells at German ships. Targets including a battleship, destroyers and the light cruiser SMS Wiesbaden. No hits are recorded for any of the shells fired.

Conqueror also took part in the failed attempt to intercept the German ships that had bombarded Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby in late 1914 and the inconclusive action of 19 August 1916.

Transferred to the Reserve Fleet at the conclusion of the First World War, HMS Conqueror was listed for disposal in 1922 in accordance with the terms of the Washington Treaty. Sold in 1922, she was scrapped in 1923.
