Parnall Puffin Amphibious Fighter Biplane

The Parnall Puffin was a two-seat experimental amphibious biplane fighter designed for the Royal Air Force. The first of three prototypes first flew on 19 November 1920. Problems with the central float caused water to spray up and damage the propellor. An improved float was designed and incorporated into the second aircraft. A further refinement was used in the third prototype.

The Puffin’s tailplane was inverted, which was intended to give the rear gunner the maximum possible field of fire. Despite showing promise, post-war budget cuts resulted in no orders being placed.
