SNCASE SE 580 French Fighter Aircraft Project
The SNCASE SE 580 was a French fighter project originally designed by Dewoitine as the D.580. With the merger of the French aviation industry and later German occupation, development moved to SNCAM as the M.580 and then SNCASE (often referred to as Sud-Est) as the SE 580.
Design work continued during the occupation of France, and with liberation, two prototypes were ordered in 1944. Difficulties with engine development and design changes, along with the advent of the jet engine led to the project’s cancellation in 1947.
