FMA I.Ae. 37 Argentine Jet Fighter

The FMA I.Ae. 37 was a prototype jet fighter developed in Argentina by Reimar Horten. A full scale glider version was built and flown on 1 October 1954. It had the unusual feature of placing the pilot in a prone position. The excellent flight characteristics obtained resulted in the decision to proceed to a powered aircraft. Due to its availability, the Rolls-Royce Derwent V was used, but was considered underpowered for a fighter aircraft. Construction commenced in 1955.

In 1956, the glider was modified to included a standard type cockpit. It was also decided that the I.Ae. 37 would be used as a trainer, while a more advanced twin engined aircraft the I.Ae. 48 would be developed as a fighter. Both programs were cancelled in 1960.
