Vickers Type 163 Transport and Bomber

The Vickers Type 163 was a four engine development of the twin engine Type 150 Vanox. The Vanox was designed as a bomber for Specification B.19/27, but proved unsuitable due to the requirement to use two engines.

Designed against Specification C.16/28, the Type 163 was a transport aircraft that could also operate as a bomber. It was powered by four 480hp Rolls-Royce F.XIVS engines in push pull pairs which were later changed to Rolls-Royce Kestrel IIIA engines.

In the bomber role, it could carry twelve 250 lb bombs and four 20 lb bombs, while as a transport it could carry ten soldiers and their equipment.

Vickers decided to develop the Type 163 as a bomber against specification B.19/27. However contracts had already been let for the winner of this design and the C.16/28 was abandoned. Consequently the Type 163 development was abandoned and the aircraft broken up in 1934.
