The EWR VJ 101 was an experimental German vertical take off and landing fighter designed for the German Luftwaffe first flying on 10 April 1963. EWR (Entwicklungsring Süd) was a joint venture to develop the aircraft by Heinkel, Bölkow and Messerschmitt. VJ stood for Versuchsjäger, (German for “Experimental Fighter”).
Changing role requirements from an interceptor to a general fighter greatly complicated development and the project was cancelled in 1968 with only the X-1 and X-2 aircraft flying.
Burma received 18 Sea Fury FB11s, all being refurbished former Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aircraft delivered between December 1957 and May 1958. These were used in the counter-insurgency role. Sea Furies were replace in Burmese service by Lockheed T-33 Shooting Stars by 1968.
