    Fleet Air Arm Museum Nowra

The Royal Australian Navy has its Fleet Air Arm Museum at Nowra NSW. It is adjacent to the naval base HMAS Albatross.  When we arrived at 2:00 PM there were only four other people visiting. Effectively we had the whole museum to ourselves.

    The Collection

The museum has an almost complete collection of the aircraft operated by the RAN.  This ranges from the early 1950s when HMAS Sydney and Melbourne were acquired to a recently retired Seahawk helicopter.  A purpose-built air-conditioned building houses all of the displays. Inside a raised mezzanine floor provides an excellent overhead perspective of the displays.  This is something that many aviation museums are lacking.  There is also plenty of space between each display so that they can be seen easily without the crowding that some museums use.

    The 1950s

The Hawker Sea Fury, Fairey Firefly and Fairey Gannett represent the 1950s. All three are camouflages in Dark sea grey with sky undersides.  The Firefly is also wearing Korean War black and white stripes.

The Modern RAN Fleet Air Arm

The jet age is represented by the Douglas A4G Skyhawk, de Havilland Sea Venom FAW Mk.53 and Grumman S2G Tracker..  Training aircraft from this period include the Macchi 326, Vampire T.22 and Skyhawk 2 seat trainer.

    Drone Collection

Drones have formed an important part of the Fleet Air Arm, removing the risks involved in towing targets for Royal Australian Navy Ships. On display is an old Radioplane MQM-33 propeller driven drone. The Australian designed Turana (based on the Ikara anti-submarine missile) and the Jindivik are also on display.  The more recent US designed BAE Kalkara is located next to the Skyhawk.

    Fleet Air Arm Museum Helicopters

There is an impressive helicopter collection, which includes a large display to the RAN Helicopter Flight Vietnam.  In line with the rest of the museum, the helicopter displays are well set out and have explanatory boards. This provides you with a thorough history of the types use within the Fleet Air Arm.

    Other Displays

In addition to the aircraft of the FAA, the Fleet Air Arm Museum has some other excellent displays. A Sopwith Pup fighter from World War Two shows the beginnings of aviation.  Nearby two six-inch guns from the original HMAS Sydney (a cruiser) illustrate what the aircraft have replaced.

HMAS Sydney the aircraft carrier, is represented by its bell, 32 foot cutter and a propeller (outside near the entrance).

A unique aircraft in the CAC Winjeel is also on display.  This particular aircraft is the prototype for the design that went on to become the primary trainer for a generation of Australian military pilots.

An unusual inclusion is a MiG-15 UTI in Polish colours. A very interesting aircraft to see, but its inclusion here seems out-of-place.

All of the displays are accompanied by descriptions and a detailed history of the FAA is provided as you progress around the museum.

There is a gift shop that also caters to the local RAN base so there is a good selection of merchandise available.

A great place to visit if you are interested in aviation or naval history.

  • Murrurundi in the NSW Upper Hunter

Murrurundi in the NSW Upper Hunter

Murrurundi is a beautiful country town in the NSW Upper Hunter Valley. The town has many lovely historical buildings, some nice cafes and has a wonderful selection of art galleries.

The Eye of the Needle Bush Walk

We started our day at Murrurundi with a walk to the Eye of the Needle. At around 90 minutes return, it is a nice bush walk with great scenery and rewarding views at the summit.  The walk starts at Paradise Park where there is a nice picnic area and toilet facilities. The rock formations here and along the track are very interesting, consisting of large exposed rock faces and boulders.

    Paradise Park Murrurundi
    Paradise Park Murrurundi

The track is well-marked with red and yellow arrows, depending the route taken. At times it can be rough and slippery underfoot. Many of the rocks are a conglomerate and when weathered, form pebbles which can slip as you walk on them.

Eye of the Needle Sign to Lookout Murrurundi
Eye of the Needle Sign to Lookout

The Eye Of the  Needle is a large crack in the rock face that you climb through. It is steep and narrow. This means that it can be difficult to climb. We took our time and got through OK. At the top the track is fairly flat to the lookout where you are rewarded with great views over the countryside and Murrurundi.

    Exploring Around Town

Returning to town, we made our way to the buildings that interested us. The first stop was St Joseph’s Catholic Church.

After this a stop at the train station took us up to the pedestrian overpass for a high level view of the buildings. The station is well maintained and the buildings all looked like they had recently been painted.

We then passed the Railway Hotel, and Anglican Church before parking in the Main Street and exploring on foot.  We walked past the White Hart Hotel, and as far as the Royal Hotel.  There are many interesting buildings along the way. Next to the old Literary Institute which is now a museum is a monument to Peter Norvill. He was a local who achieved many Australian flying records.

The local tourist information is located near here.  So, if you are not sure what else to see, drop in and see the friendly staff.

    Coffee Cakes and Art

We found a great little café selling home-made cakes and sat down for a  break for a snack and coffee. Nelliebelles Bake And Cake Cafe had some delicious cakes and they went down well with the coffee. We had missed the pedestrian swing bridge and the people there gave us directions. Making our way to the bridge, we walked over it and yes it does bounce with each step you take. Just up from here was the old police station and adjoining court-house.

Our last stop before going home was Michael Reid’s Murrurundi Gallery. The setting is a work of art in itself and the interior of the two buildings is full of art.

We had a great time in Murrurundi, from the bush walk to the exploring around town and the refreshments.

  • Newtown Street Art

    Newtown Street Art

    Newtown

Like many modern western cities Newtown has a problem with graffiti. To combat this issue the city council has made many areas available to artists for official street art. Newtown street art has since become an attraction bringing people to the area as well as reducing an eyesore.

    Getting There

Travelling to Newtown is very easy. The Newtown Train Station is a nice central location from which to start exploring. Although the art works are constantly changing and being renewed most of the more interesting ones appear to be permanent.

    Street Art

We went on a Newtown street art walk with several locations in mind and ended up finding many that were either new or not mentioned in other guides to the area. As we walked past side streets we would see more interesting works, or pass them on the street we were walking down. The walk we took is only a suggestion as there is so much to see.  It also took far longer than the 40 minutes suggested, because of photo stops and detours.

Some art was obscured by cars, bins and light-poles. As there’s nothing you can do about it,we just moved on to the next one.

Newtown Street Art Sydney Australia www.destinationsjourney.com
    Newtown Street Art

Some of the street art has also been prayed over, so the problem of graffiti has not completely gone away.  As you walk around the side streets there are many areas where this is still the case, but the great street art makes up for it.

The volume of artwork could easily take half a day or more to see. If you don’t want to spend this much time just pick the main ones and see those.

    Coffee and Old Buildings

Newtown also has a lot of coffee shops. The main street is full of them.so you wont go thirsty. While walking around loom up and admire the old buildings and churches you pass some of them are quite beautiful. In the quiet side streets you will pass some amazing old cottages.
