French Battleship Voltaire

Voltaire was a French semi-dreadnought battleship of the Danton-class. Launched on 16 January 1909, she was commissioned into the Marine Nationale on 1 August 1911.

On 16 August 1914, Voltaire participated in the Battle of Antivari along with a large Fleet of British and French ships. She participated in the sinking of the Austro-Hungarian protected cruiser Zenta.

For the remainder of the First World War, she helped blockade the Straits of Otranto and the Dardanelles to prevent German, Austro-Hungarian and Turkish warships from breaking out into the Mediterranean. On 10 October 1918, while returning to Mudros following an overhaul, she was torpedoed by the German U-boat UB-48. Although struck by two torpedoes, she was able to make temporary repairs at Mudros and then sail to Bizerte for permanent repairs.

She was modernised post-war from 1922 to 1925, being used as a training ship from 1927. She was condemned in 1937 and scuttled in Quiberon Bay (France) on 31 May 1938 for long-term use as a target. The wreck was sold in December 1949 and broken up from March 1950 onwards.

The final production version of the Arado Ar 196 was the A-5, which entered production in 1943. Major changes included new radios and cockpit instruments, switching the rear gun to the much-improved MG 81Z with 2000 rounds of ammunition, changing the cannon type to the MG FF/M with extended 90 round magazines, added armor protection for the pilot and observer and strengthened the airframe. The A-5 also upgraded engine type to BMW 132W. The A-5 remained in production until August 1944 when production of the Arado Ar 196 was halted.

Lorraine 40t French Medium Tank

The Lorraine 40t was a French medium tank designed to replace the AMX-50 then in development. The AMX-50 project became too heavy once changes were incorporated to increase armour and gun size to combat the IS-3. As a result the Lorraine 40t had thinner armour and rubber road wheels.

Armament consisted of a 100mm gun in an oscillating turret with a 50 round magazine.

Two prototypes were completed in 1952, with evaluations being undertaken until 1954. Once American M47 Patton tanks became available, interest in both the AMX-50 and 40t decreased and the two prototypes were scrapped.
